Packaging Coatings in 2026: Regulation, Sustainability and Technology Reshape the Industry
Packaging coatings are becoming an increasingly strategic component of the global packaging value chain.
Historically, coatings applied to cans, closures, tubes and other packaging formats were primarily viewed as functional layers designed to protect the substrate, preserve the packaged product and deliver the required appearance.
That role is changing.
In 2026, packaging coatings increasingly need to address food-contact requirements, chemical regulations, recyclability, light weighting, production efficiency and sustainability at the same time. The industry is therefore moving from a conventional focus on coating performance toward a broader focus on packaging-system performance.
For coating manufacturers, packaging converters, can makers, chemical suppliers and brand owners, the question is no longer simply whether a coating performs its basic function. The more important question is whether it can deliver the required performance while remaining compliant, recyclable, commercially viable and compatible with evolving manufacturing processes.
Regulation Is Reshaping Packaging Coating Technologies
Regulatory developments have become one of the most important factors influencing packaging coating technologies.
The European Union’s restrictions on bisphenol A (BPA) in food-contact materials are particularly significant for metal packaging. The EU adopted Regulation (EU) 2024/3190, which prohibits the use of BPA in covered food-contact materials, with limited derogations and transition provisions. The regulation specifically affects applications including coatings used on metal cans.
This is accelerating industry interest in BPA-non-intent (BPA-NI) and other alternative coating systems.
The challenge, however, extends beyond replacing one chemical component.
Packaging coatings must simultaneously deliver adhesion, corrosion protection, flexibility, forming performance, thermal resistance, migration compliance, taste and odour neutrality and shelf-life protection.
Consequently, regulatory change is becoming a technology-development issue rather than simply a compliance issue.
The same principle applies to other substances and regulatory requirements affecting packaging materials. Coating suppliers increasingly need to understand not only the formulation itself but also how individual raw materials may perform under future regulatory scenarios.
Replacing Chemistry Without Losing Performance
Packaging represents one of the more demanding applications for industrial coatings.
A beverage can coating may encounter forming, filling, pasteurization or sterilization, transportation and extended storage. Food cans can contain chemically aggressive products and undergo demanding thermal-processing conditions. Closures, tubes and specialty packaging have their own mechanical, chemical and barrier requirements.
As a result, alternative coating technologies cannot be evaluated solely through laboratory testing.
